Tips on training a Pop Gun?

Get a little Pop Gun & get the dog used to loud noises.

Don't start any serious training until the dog is old enough to be mature, 2 yrs. Train the pup to fetch, it is a start to being a gun dog. If at all possible let the pup learn from watching other dogs retrieve the real thing. Take him along even if he isn't old enough to actually do any retrieving.

He will hear the gun & see other retrievers doing their thing. You may not have to do any training if he learns this way. It is called cultural evolution. Learning by watching. All wild animals learn by watching mom & dad.

He would call her back and praise her for being such a good girl. It only took him a few weeks before she got used to it and didn't even flinch when he shot the cap gun. He would use 5 or six caps while she was eating. (of course he let the neighbors know what was going on and what time of day he would be doing this). Start training YOUNG. As soon as they're old enough to leave their mother, they're old enough to begin training. If you can do it w/ out treats it's the best.
